All DIY Costa Rica Recommendations › Forums › Our DIY Costa Rica Questions and Answers Forum › Which direction to travel around Costa Rica?
Hi. Love the resources provided on this site. However, we are planning 10 – 12 days in Costa Rica and while we have a pretty good idea of the places we want to go and things we want to do, we are not sure which direction we should travel.
We’re arriving in San Jose in September and want to do a 2 day rafting trip on the Pacuare River, go to Tortuguero for 2 nights, Arenal/La Fortuna for 2 – 3 nights and Monteverde for 1 or 2 nights before returning to San Jose. Which is the best direction to travel, ie San Jose, Monteverde, Arenal, Tortuguero, Pacuare, San Jose or perhaps the other direction? We will be relying on shuttles and tour transfers and would like to perhaps go in/out of Tortuguero via La Pavona and Cano Blanco (ie in from one direction and out the other way). Suggestions on directions and tour connections to minimise back-tracking on our little lap would be appreciated. Gracias, Cherie
I’ve heard some good things about San Jose and am actually planning a trip there in mid-September.
Starting in San Jose, I’d probably head to Tortuguero first, then do the Pacuare River rafting trip, and after that, go to Arenal/La Fortuna and Monteverde. It seems like the best way to avoid too much backtracking. If you’re open to a little side trip, consider checking out the northwest coast. I came across this place called http://www.costaelena.com, a quiet beach community that’s really peaceful. If you’ve got some extra time, it might be a cool spot to add something different to your trip.
