Hi, we have 9 nights/10 days to spend in Costa Rica and we’re thinking of spending time in Arenal, Monteverde and Samara. We’re flying in to SJO and plan on going to Arenal first. I googled the distance between all 3 places and it seems like going to Samara next might save us a little bit of overall driving time instead of going to Monteverde after Arenal. Is that true or does it make more sense to go to Monteverde next, then Samara?
    Thanks!

Don’t hold hard to any ideas of saving driving time in the Costa Rica Mountains. It probably doesn’t matter too much to save what Google claims is an hour difference. The views are extremely beautiful, AND very narrow, potholed, windy and steep, and you may well find yourself behind a slow truck. If you can get a 4 wheel-drive vehicle, do! (Wild Rider in San Jose is a good alternative if the DIY recommended one has no vehicles; quite possible if you’re not booking many months in advance. BTW, They laughed at us when we asked if we would want cruise control, you won’t be using it, even on the few divided highways.) It also depends if you stay near La Fortuna or El Castillo near Arenal. El Castillo is much quieter, we loved it, but did not have zip line type activities one might be seeking if traveling with teenagers, for example, but instead lovely (steep) walks, great birds, kayaks to and a wonderful butterfly conservatory. There are kayaks to rent down on the lake. You may want to think about temperature in your decision; we were there last February, and the coast is HOT. (We stayed farther south near Parque Corcovado, but it was equally hot driving north up the coast, the only flat roads we encountered. Monteverde and the Arenal area were much cooler, especially the cloud forest, so it might be nice to put your beach time in the middle. Enjoy! Hope that’s helpful.

    Hi Jodi!

This is a great question and one that we receive often. My response is usually to pay less attention to the drive time/distance and assign more weight to whether you want to visit the beach at the end of your vacation or in the middle of your vacation. (There is very little difference between visiting Monteverde before or after Samara with respect to the amount of time and distance you’ll be driving.) Some visitors like to save the beach for the end of their trip because it’s typically the most relaxing leg of a vacation. Others prefer to break up adventures in La Fortuna and Monteverde with relaxation in between. My personal preference is to visit La Fortuna and Monteverde sequentially before heading to the coast, but the decision is entirely yours. If it helps any, there isn’t a right or wrong way to go here, so I’d advise you to go with your gut and arrange the destination in whichever order feels the best for you. 🙂
