    Hello,

We are looking for a family-run-place with private rooms for a couple (not hostel-style) near Parque Nacional los Qetzales that specializes in bird-watching and is near hiking trails, 2 meals a day would be preferred or near a soda. We would prefer to avoid the “resort/pool/alcohol” scene. Thank you, John

Not quite family run, but not a pool/alcohol resort either, quiet, with trails down to a waterful…we stayed at Paraiso Quetzal in a small cabin, a lovely breakfast is included, and we did have one delicious evening meal in their restaurant, but there are other local places to eat not far away. One special place was Las Truchas selva madre where you can fish without possible failure for your own trout, and they provide a fire, pan, oil and batter. Can’t be fresher. The Paraiso Quetzal grounds are lovely to walk in quite a ways down the mountain to a waterfall, and they have wonderful and numerous hummingbirds right on their deck. They found us a bird guide for the morning who was great, two separate quetzal viewings!

    Hi CRDIY23!

I’m a fan of Cerro Vueltas Lodge (formerly Las Vueltas Lodge), a peaceful, family-run hotel that’s about a 10-minute drive from Parque Nacional Los Quetzales. If you’re looking for something fancier, although still quiet and low-key, you’ll find a collection of superior-quality accommodations in the San Gerardo de Dota region, about a 20-minute drive from the park, including the Trogon Lodge and the Savegre Hotel Natural Reserve & Spa. Nature trails and bird-watching opportunities abound there. During our most recent stay at the Savegre Hotel Natural Reserve & Spa, we enjoyed hiking the trails, checking out their observation deck, admiring the many hummingbird feeders, and seeing quetzals during the early morning hours.

    Pura vida! 🙂
