    Hi mrsclaus999!

Thanks so much for your interest in DIY Costa Rica!

I apologize for taking a little while to get back to you. We just released this new Questions and Answers Forum this week and it has taken us a bit of time to adjust to it. 😉

If you’re interested in botanical gardens, you’re in luck! Costa Rica has many. In addition, tons of properties around the country (including several accommodations, restaurants, and non-botanical-garden-specific attractions) also have beautiful flora arrangements on display, so it’s likely you’ll see a variety of plant, tree, and flower species no matter where you go.

If you’d like to visit a specific botanical garden attraction, however, there are some great ones to choose from. Here’s a list of some of our favorites to visit. I’ve also included the rough area of the country where you can find each as I’m not sure which exact destinations you plan to visit during your trip.

    Lankester Gardens (Cartago)
    Wilson Botanical Garden (San Vito)
    Monteverde Orchid Garden (Santa Elena/Monteverde)
    CATIE (Turrialba)
Nectandria Cloud Forest Garden (San Ramon)

Since you asked about Lankester specifically, I can let you know that this attraction is about 3 kilometers southeast of the city of Cartago, which is about 25 kilometers southeast of downtown San Jose. I’d approximate the one-way drive time (traffic depending) between downtown San Jose and the garden at Lankester to be a little under 1 hour.

As a side note, the Sacred Seeds Sanctuary at Finca Luna Lodge (near La Fortuna) has a nice display of medicinal plants, if you’re interested in these at all. If you plan to visit the Rio Fortuna Waterfall (a.k.a., the La Fortuna Waterfall), that attraction also has a lovely orchid garden you can stroll through. Here’s a link to more information about the waterfall and its on-site orchid garden: https://costaricatravelblog.com/la-fortuna-waterfall/
